Dustbin are more problem than solution. As much as 50-70% of the garbage is biodegradable that does not need to travel anywhere. It rots if we throw it into the dustbin, or any bin. We must develop compost pits instead, where it can decompose and lower the burden of municipal carriers. That will cut 40-60% of the garbage right there! This is a rather disturbing idea for many people. But wait and see how it can be effective.

t!
That will cut 40-60% of the garbage right there!
No need to throw it into the dustbin!
Compost pits can cut the garbage load in half !
That can save a lot of time and resources! Also the compost has economical value - and can be used in garden/plants as manure or sold off in the marke
Compost pits are holes dug in mud, where we can throw anything that's natural and that becomes the food for the micro organisms once it is covered by mud.
WHAT COMPOST PITS DO?
The insects in the soil convert all the "Waste" into valuable compost which can be used in farms to enrich the soil.
Segregating the biodegradable items and NOT giving it to the garbage trucks really solves majority of the problem! When we Bury the garbage, it does not rot, it does not create smell. It is good for environment and soil.
Compost pits should become part of every household, office/society/shopping malls/wedding venues.
All it requires in a pit where you throw biodegradable items along with some mud, and the items automatically converts into compost within a span of three to six months, depending on the temperature of the area. This can then be used in the garden to improve growth of plants. Or sold off in the market for profits!
The beauty of compost pit model is , we can have compost pit anywhere within a minute! yes! wherever we are, we can dig a small pit and put the garbage there and problem gets solved. RIGHT THERE!
FAQs
What if there is no compost pits around? where do you throw food material?
Basically you can bury the food item anywhere as long as you cover it with mud. That becomes food for the organisms and problem is fixed right there. It gets decomposed. In fact, you can throw stuff in the open, if you are in the countryside. No problem!
What all you can throw/bury in mud ?
anything that is natural, you can bury in mud , vegetables, peels, leftover food, most paper can be buried in mud and is biodegradable. Even cotton clothes, and natural fiber can be thrown into the mud. But we suggest to donate the clothes instead.
What is the monetary value of compost?
In India compost can sell upto 6-8 Rs per kg. One household can produce upto 50 kg of such waste every month. That means it can make approximately 400-500 rs in a month. That can cover water bills or mobile recharge for one month!
Govt should make compost pits compulsory
especially for malls/housing societies. Not only it will decrease costs for transportation, it will also help in segregation and become an income source that will encourage this process and be more sustainable.
Don't forget to tie them so it does nt spread!
You can give to scrap dealers get money! - or municipal collectors.
If you clean and give to them. It will get recycled. If you give it MIXED with food items. Then it ROTS
Now that we have cut 50% of the biodegradable "garbage" in first step. The rest 30 percent and the most notorious and dangerous is plastic.
And within plastic, the biggest trouble is polythene bags because they are most difficult to collect as they fly here and there.
The worst part is they become food for animals and every year thousands of animals die because they get suffocated or intoxicated by plastic.
The trick is to Collect all plastic by putting it inside plastic and tying it. So it does nt spread in open air.
Here's a picture where, i have collect around 15 days worth of plastic in a bag. Which i will give to rag pickers in my area. And it is equal to pay for one time meal for them.
Plastic bags are also least recycled because, they are difficult to clean and they are also less valuable than other materials thrown in the garbage like metal items.
They are less valuable but they are MORE in number. A possible solution is to collect plastic in plastic bags like i do in my home and once it gets filled give it to rag pickers who make 50-100 rs out of one sack full of plastic.
There's monetary value there. Of course, you can contact the local scrap dealers. Every household can easy recycle plastic worth around 300-500. That can cover cost for your mobile recharge for a month!
Everything else, should be given to the needy. What is garbage for you, is probably a useful item for somebody. Find NGO's nearby your home and see if they accept cloth etc.
This is very popular in country like India. We Indians donate much of the stuff to the needy and that's how it gets used. India is also one of the LEAST waste producing countries in the world. Especially in villages, people use everything to the last thread. And don't have a habit of throwing anything away!
In order to make garbage economically worthy. it has to be clean. The reason why garbage is garbage because it is rotten.
If we dispose garbage properly. As explained in above steps, we can clean and give waste items to rag pickers and
if we add monetary value to material. People will stop throwing it and instead start giving it to
protocol to hire them in buildings, malls, organizations. The salary of these rag pickers can be covered if we give them "CLEAN GARBAGE" because then it will have economic value.
The ultimate goal of Zero GARBAGE model is to save environment, to reduce costs, to be more mindful about our planet other inhabitants.
Sometimes, simple little solutions can bring better results than expensive seemingly bigger and complex solutions. I have implemented Zero Kachra no dustbin model in my personal life and various organizations where i worked earlier.
It worked like a charm. I
don't see a reason why it should nt work at a larger level.
And everytime i follow ZeroKachra model, it gives me satisfaction that i am playing MY PART in making a better , healthier world.
I also think if the governments adopt this model, it will help them in cutting down the costs . A slight learning curve can bring us joy and good health in longer run.
I think it is totally worth it.
i am against dustbins or any bins because of following reasons.
Dustbins is a confusing term that does not promote segregation, its quick convenient and dirty.
Dustbins are made of plastic. Is nt that a reason alone to avoid them? hello!? arent We are trying to reduce plastic use ?
Dustbin costs a lot of money and time to set up, maintain and replace. Let's simplify the process! We don't think dustbins justify the overheads it causes. And it counter productive in the process.
I am against using any bins, as it is not required. It just increases costs and makes whole process lengthier and expensive.
Various reasons
the monetary benefit should entice many people to adopt this model. Many people are not aware about "compost pits" and hence, throw stuff in the dustbin.
It will save their time and money, both.
Also, i think we all want our planet to be better. So we believe people will adopt this model. We plan to create awareness material, posters, films, ads to make people aware about how simple this model is and how they can contribute to the cause. Of course,
If the government makes laws based on the principles mentioned here, then definitely it should help in propogating the idea to at least some level, at least in public places. Underground small pits can be constructed where people can throw
Well, i am kind of a foolish optimist, every change in the world, started with some kind of foolish optimism.
And anyway, activism is not driven by results or its possibility. Even if I can get 10 people to follow this model. I would be happy with the outcome.
Well, in that case, it still works because when the compost gets ready its is broken down like mud and then other material can be easy filtered out using a mesh. Rather easier than a landfill.
Of course not, this is just an introduction to the model and core idea is to segregate the garbage at the time of disposal and simplify and reduce the steps taken in waste management.
There can be myriads of approaches to this and every place and situation will require different approach, but the basic philosophy remains the same.
No! not yet, as of yet the only outcome i want out of this project is some donations so i can promote the model more and keep some money myself. I have no other personal interest in this model, except for that.
first goal is to promote the idea and get people join the movement. It would be great if the government can implement these ideas as laws as then more people will follow it and things will get streamlined.
I am also planning to set up an app for finding scrap dealers locations. You can REGISTER on our website to get updated about it once its ready and recieve updates about the project once its ready.
How can government make compost pits compulsory, for homes and private spaces? How do you justify the use of space?
First of all, it does not take much space. One small compost pit made up of 2 feet【61 cm】 deep can collect one month worth of waste from a family. And any rule should justify the outcome. Yes, it will take some space. But so do trees and toilets. But we still construct toilets, beause its critical to have them. We plant trees because they are beneficial for us.
Same applies for compost pits. They are beneficial for everyone. They justify the resources we put in them.
What's right about them? They are convenient, but the good part ends there They are mismanaged, they cost mountain to run . They don't solve anything. They are increasing in size and taking up space. Stuff that goes there rarely gets recycled.
The biggest problem with landfills is they are home for diseases for animals. Many birds, animals forage in these areas and carry diseases.
Humans need to stop being assholes for our .little convenience and stop spoiling environment for animals. AS they are equal shareholders and owners of this planet as we are and deserve a good life.
I would not prefer that this project goes into any specific brand.
As then the competitors would nt use the model.
My main aim is that this model is replicated at all levels, everywhere. And sponsoring by one company/ one political party/person would be counter productive.
You can however, run this model in your company or organization and i would definitely consider posting about it on our social media channels. If that helps.
But sorry, i don't think Branding this model to specific PERSON or BRAND is a good idea.
ZeroKachra NoDustbin is a campaign website run by an individual, it is not affiliated with any non-govt or any government organisation.
The goal of the website is to promote the idea of not using dustbin and create economical value from garbage so it does not spoil the environment and reduce landfills.
