Phase 1 - Vatavaran's Foundation and Early Days
Vatavaran was founded in 1991 as a community-based NGO in response to the breakdown of Delhi's centralized waste management system. It began as a small, informal initiative to address the growing problem of scattered and decaying garbage in the Asian Games Village area. Ragpickers, who were already sorting through waste, were organized into teams and trained to provide door-to-door garbage collection services.
Vatavaran began by collecting waste and taking it to a designated wasteland for sorting. Biodegradable waste was composted, recyclables were sold to local scrap dealers, and the composting area was transformed into a green space. The team also cleaned roads, lanes, and parks, working 8-hour shifts with breaks, keeping the community clean.
Within two years, Vatavaran’s decentralized waste management model gained popularity, with many local communities showing interest in adopting this sustainable approach.
Becoming a Formal Organization
In 1993, Jawaharlal Nehru University requested Vatavaran’s services but required a formal structure, leading to Vatavaran’s official registration as an NGO. From then on, it operated as a non-profit, voluntary organization focused on ecological and social improvement.
Expanding Activities
Over the next 30 years, Vatavaran expanded its efforts to tackle various environmental issues, always aiming to create a positive impact on the planet and its communities.
Transition to Vatavaran Rhizome
In 2020, Vatavaran NGO dissolved, giving way to Vatavaran Rhizome—a network of independent, self-sustaining organizations working together across various fields and regions. These groups collaborate with the same selfless mission that Vatavaran stood for.
Current Projects and Services
By 2022, Vatavaran Rhizome members began joint initiatives. The network now focuses on two key projects:
Slum Development
Monkey Population Management
Additionally, it offers two main services:
Cleaning Services
Colony Strays Service
Through these initiatives, Vatavaran Rhizome continues to promote environmental health and community well-being.
Transition to Gola Project
In 2024, Vatavaran Rhizome rebranded as Gola Project. Inspired by the circle of life and ecosystems, Gola developed new models and restructured its operations to work in more innovative ways.
